Institutional Partnerships
Tostan has successful partnerships with several educational and service institutions that provide placements for students and volunteers in Africa.
At the following universities, for-credit internships may be available through Tostan.
For years, Tostan has looked to IE3 as a source of quality volunteer candidates, and we continue to do so. The staff at IE3 advise and prepare students for a possible internship with Tostan, including walking them through Tostan's volunteer application process. With the input of IE3, Tostan then selects and prepares candidates for volunteer positions.
Majors:
Possible majors would include, but are not limited to: education, international studies, development studies, sociology, anthropology, women's studies, human rights, public policy, French, computer science, business, agriculture, international health, and non-profit organization management.
Graduate Students: This internship could present a practical research opportunity for a graduate student in educational methods
or human rights. Graduate students who are accepted into the volunteer program and plan to conduct research may receive guidance
from Department of Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning (MERL) in the process.
Foreign Language Requirement: Intern must be at third or fourth year college level
French. Must have solid speaking and listening skills, also strong French reading skills. African French differs from European French and therefore could serve as Francophone credit for French majors. Interns are expected to make an effort to learn a local national language (Wolof, Fulani, etc.)
Formerly known as the School for International Training, the SIT Graduate Institute offers graduate students a widened view of the world and opportunities for in-depth study of the most critical global issues of our times.
Founded over 40 years ago as a training center for early Peace Corps volunteers, the SIT Graduate Institute prepares students from more than 30 countries to become informed and effective leaders, professionals, and global citizens. Graduates of SIT's degree programs go on to start nonprofit organizations, teach languages, become government and civic leaders, and achieve success in the private sector.
Through a combination of classroom and field-based learning in fields ranging from international education to international development to language teaching, SIT Graduate Institute enables students to transfer academic learning into real-world practice in the service of social change.
Structured practica:
Tostan and the SIT Graduate Institute have a common goal to facilitate educational experiences that bridge cultures and transform lives through field-based application of classroom knowledge in a nongovernmental organization setting. In addition, they believe strongly in the importance of working at the community level and engaging the entire community, and recognize the potential of a non-African volunteer to support and build capacity of local change agents - both within the organization and without.
These goals and beliefs have led to a partnership in which Tostan and SIT coordinate practicums for SIT graduate students in various Tostan offices. SIT shares Tostan's current volunteer openings with their graduates, and Tostan helps prepare, orient, support, and evaluate selected volunteers. A student wishing to do research during his or her volunteer time with Tostan can collaborate with our Department of Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning (MERL) to define and refine the research plan.
Foreign Language Requirement: Practicum student must have solid speaking, listening, and reading skills, to permit them to function in a francophone work environment. Students are encouraged to make an effort to learn a local national language (Wolof, Fulani, etc.)
