BBC World Challenge 2009 – Vote now for the Solar Sisters to win!
Barefoot College, Tostan’s partner in bringing solar power to rural African communities, named as finalist in the 2009 BBC World Challenge!
The BBC World Challenge aims at finding and rewarding projects or small businesses from around the world that have shown enterprise and innovation at a grass roots level. This year, Barefoot College’s Solar Sister project, which trains women from rural Africa in solar electrical engineering to enable them to provide and maintain solar power for their communities, has been selected as 1 of 12 finalists from a global pool of nominees.
The first Tostan-sponsored Solar Sisters, 12 women from rural Senegal and Djibouti, returned home last month and are now establishing solar electricity within their communities. You can read more about the Tostan-sponsored Solar Sisters from Senegal and Djibouti by clicking here.
The Winner and two runners up will be announced at the award ceremony to be held at The Hague in the Netherlands and broadcast on 5 December 2009 on BBC World News. What’s more, the winners will be awarded a grant of $20,000!
