On the same day, December 20, that 40 communities in Guinea-Bissau declared their promotion of human rights and the abandonment of harmful practices such as FGC, the U.N. General Assembly passed an international resolution that calls for intensified global efforts to end female genital cutting (FGC).

This UN recognition of FGC as a human rights violation parallels the continued action led by communities across East and West Africa to abandon the practice.
