On Sunday, December 4th, 2022, 38 communities gathered in the village of Sansamba, in the district of Djibabouya, Sedhiou region, Senegal, of which 20 declared the abandonment of female genital cutting (FGC) and child marriage.
A vibrant and musical night of festivities were held before the declaration ceremony, setting the tone for the communities who celebrated with dancing, theatre sketches, and folklore-telling. Incorporating learnings from Tostan’s Community Empowerment Program, this declaration day represented the culmination of the participation of 20 communities from the Sedhiou region of Senegal.
