UNICEF Mauritania has produced a video focusing on the public declaration ceremony which took place in Aleg in the Brakna region of Mauritania on September 25th 2013, where 201 communities announced their abandonment of the harmful traditional practices of female genital cutting and child/forced marriage
The video, available in French, features interviews with participants of the public declaration. Religious leaders, community members, and a representative of UNICEF Mauritania give their support to the movement to abandon female genital cutting, emphasising that the practice is harms girls’ and women’s health, and is not a religious requirement.
