It is with deep sorrow and immense gratitude that we at Tostan share the passing of Oureye Sall, an extraordinary woman, a trailblazer, and a beloved leader in the movement to uphold human rights and end harmful traditional practices across Africa. Oureye passed away last week, leaving behind a legacy that has forever transformed the lives of countless women, girls, and families.

Oureye’s personal journey was one of profound courage and transformation. Married at the age of 14 and once a practitioner of Female Genital Cutting (FGC), she bravely confronted the traditions that shaped her early life. Everything changed when she took part in Tostan’s non-formal education program from 1996-98. There, she encountered the power of human rights education—and with it, the awakening of a deep calling.

Determined to create a better future for the next generations, Oureye made the remarkable decision to dedicate her life to the abandonment of FGC and child marriage. At a time when even speaking about these issues was taboo, she stood up with unshakable resolve. She traveled tirelessly from village to village, often accompanied by religious leaders and fellow women, opening hearts and minds with her truths.

Ourèye never spoke from a place of judgment, but from love, experience, and deep empathy. She openly shared her regrets and her newfound knowledge, inviting communities to return to their core values of dignity, health, and compassion. Through her authenticity and unwavering commitment, she helped ignite a movement—one that has led thousands of communities across Senegal and beyond to abandon harmful practices and embrace new paths rooted in human rights.

Her voice, her story, and her spirit became a beacon of hope for so many. Her courage inspired others to reflect, speak out, and act with the same boldness she embodied every day.

Today, as we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary light that Ourèye brought into the world. Her impact will continue to ripple across generations. We honor her legacy by carrying forward the work she began—with the same humility, compassion, and  dedication.

Rest in peace, Ourèye. Your life has changed the world.
