Washington, DC—Tostan’s executive director, Molly Melching, was named by Newsweek and The Daily Beast as one of “150 Women Who Shake the World.” The list, which was featured in the March 14th edition of Newsweek, consists of extraordinary women world leaders, activists, and change-makers who are successfully breaking down barriers of prejudice and gender inequality and empowering women through education and human rights.
Each woman highlighted on this list is contributing to the worldwide movement for women’s empowerment in varying ways. Some are influential women advocating for gender equality from positions of power, while others, like Molly Melching, are creating positive social change at the grassroots level. Many of the women included in this list attended and spoke at the Women in the World Stories and Solutions Summit hosted by Newsweek and The Daily Beast in New York City on March 10th through 12th. The “150 Women Who Shake the World” list and the Women in the World Summit honor the efforts of these women as well as the growing network of people and organizations that support them.
When asked about the list, Molly said that she was honored and humbled. “I share this honor with the thousands of women and men, both in Tostan partner communities and everywhere around the world, who are working tirelessly to improve the lives of women and girls in their communities,” said Molly.
Coinciding with this feature by Newsweek and The Daily Beast, Tostan was also highlighted by Google as a “recommended organization” that is effectively working to improve the lives of women worldwide. Google encourages those who support the empowerment of women to donate to one of the progressive organizations featured on their site dedicated to International Women’s Day.
