WASHINGTON DC, USA , September 5, 2007 – UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman praised Tostan’s community-based methods in a September 5 op-ed piece on the need to support the movement against harmful practices aimed at women and girls such as female genital cutting (FGC), child marriage, and honor killings. Veneman pointed out how Tostan’s grassroots efforts to give women more of a voice in their communities have resulted in a significant number of Senegalese villages agreeing to abandon FGC and child/forced marriage, serving as a model for improving girls’ lives throughout the world.
