Roots in Mbour and Rufisque
Before the leadership roles, the missions abroad, and the program responsibilities, Birima was simply a young man growing up between Mbour and Rufisque, two areas on the coast and in the suburbs of Dakar. Born in Mbour and raised in Rufisque from the age of ten, he moved between two environments, one coastal and one urban, absorbing the values of humility, family, and perseverance. These early years shaped the person who would later work across countries to support communities facing some of the most complex contexts in Africa.
A First Step Toward Tostan
Birima Fall’s entry into Tostan happened in an unexpected way. He did not find Tostan, Tostan reached him through his wife. She noticed a job announcement for a bilingual trainer, a position that matched his experience, and encouraged him to apply. He did and was selected.
At the time, Tostan operated in Senegal and Guinea. Soon after his arrival, Tostan expanded its education program into Mali, Guinea Bissau, Somalia, and The Gambia. Birima found himself contributing to this new phase of growth.
Lessons From the First Days
His first days at Tostan still make him smile. He arrived at the office in a tie, eager to show professionalism. The team smiled, not because he looked too formal, but because Tostan values closeness more than strict formality.
Then came his first overnight stay in a village. Instead of a quiet night under the stars, he found himself sharing the space with rats. It was uncomfortable, but it taught him an important lesson. Working with communities requires presence, humility, and the ability to adapt to realities that are often far from ideal.
Learning Through Movement and Practice
He began as a bilingual trainer, then joined different teams within the Programs Department. Each assignment expanded his skills. He worked at the Tostan Training Center and supported new country programs. His responsibilities grew naturally as he gained experience.
One opportunity reshaped his trajectory. He was appointed National Coordinator in Somalia. It was his first major leadership role.
Somalia: The Forge of A Leader
Moving to Somalia required courage. He left his wife and two young children in Senegal to lead a national program in a difficult and unstable context. The role tested him. It required strong leadership, empathy, and the capacity to support a team under constant pressure.
In Somalia, he learned how to navigate uncertainty, build trust with local partners, and guide program activities in complex conditions. He also learned that genuine leadership grows through service and listening.
One moment he remembers with pride is the organization of a public declaration on the abandonment of female genital cutting and child marriage. It was a milestone that many thought would not be possible in the Somali context.
Building Credibility Through Fieldwork
Birima knew that becoming a program officer meant working alongside colleagues with strong academic and field backgrounds. He had to expand his own knowledge. Tostan’s culture helped him. The emphasis on humility, shared learning, and community engagement pushed him to grow through practice.
His experience as National Coordinator strengthened his credibility, sharpened his leadership, and helped him develop the soft skills that shape Tostan staff. The field taught him patience, empathy, and adaptability.

At the Tostan Training Center, Birima has facilitated training sessions for thousands of leaders from more than 50 countries.
